eSource for Standardized Health Information Exchange in Clinical Research: A Systematic Review of Progress in the Last Year

To identify studies conductedusing the direct, electronic extraction of health record (EHR) datato data capture (EDC) systems, also known as eSource, and toidentify any gaps or limitations present for promoting standardized healthinformation exchange in clinical research.Materials Methods:Articleswere included only if solution described (1) utilized eSource to directlyexchange electronically from EHR-to-EDC (2) was relevant aprospective study use case.Results:Intotal, 20 articles were identified, describing a total 15 uniqueeSource interventions. Of 15interventions, 12 single-site, single-EHR (SS-SE) implementations 3were multi-site, multi-EHR (MS-ME) implementations. All implementationsmentioned standards, but nearly all referenced older exchangestandards. Discussion:Following trajectory work towardsdirect EHR-to-EDC, collection, we appear have arrived at thepoint where information systems leveraging standards can offer efficiencyand increased quality research. However, these methods need betested effectiveness acceptance context real multicenterclinical trials. Several early using single source forresearch patient care appeared over decade ago.
